Heretic
Raven Software's 1994 release of Heretic is recognised as a seminal first-person shooter in the annals of classic PC gaming history. This game broke with convention by fusing a magical and mediaeval aesthetic with a gloomy fantasy setting. As the main character, players must make their way through horrifying surroundings and battle grotesque monsters and demonic hordes armed with a variety of magical weapons.
Heretic was the first game to feature unique gameplay concepts, such as the enigmatic artefact inventory system and the intricate level design that required players to navigate through buildings that resembled mazes. The assortment of magical weapons, which included staffs made of ethereal material and lethal relics, enhanced the fighting experience by emphasising the necessity of making thoughtful choices when facing a variety of adversaries.

The multiplayer aspect of Heretic, which allowed users to engage in intense deathmatches and contributed to the genre's competitive edge, was a major draw. The addition of unique power-ups and several player classes enhanced the multiplayer dynamics and produced an interesting environment for both friends and foes.
It's interesting to note that Heretic uses the same id Tech engine as Doom to create fluid and realistic gameplay. The game's ambient soundtrack by Kevin Schilder created a spooky mood and heightened the sense of impending catastrophe in the eerie, alien environments.
